Our beloved Mother, Sister, Aunt, and Kokom; Mary Helene Tcimena (Jerome) Whiteduck, age 82, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 25, 2022, at the Maniwaki Hospital. She was born on April 2, 1940, nearby Rapid Lake, Quebec to the late Simon Jerome and Dr. Lena (Jerome) Nottaway who later remarried to the late Jim Nottaway. She had many brothers and sisters who are predeceased Laurent Jerome, Irene Jerome, Edward Jerome, Philomen Jerome, Delphis Jerome, Louis Jerome, Germain Nottaway, Barbara Nottaway and the surviving siblings are Willie Nottaway, Jeanne Nottaway, Lucy (Nottaway) Decoursay, Mary-Jane Nottaway and Eugene Nottaway.

Mary married her sweetheart Percival (Percy) Whiteduck on July 11, 1965, in Rapid Lake, Quebec. Mary had 5 beautiful ducklings with Percy who are Simon, the late Richard (Ding), John, Georgina (Gina) and Georgette. She attended the Spanish and Kenora Residential Schools in the North shore area of Ontario and was also a survivor of these schools.

Mary was a Jack of all trades who worked many different fields, from working on a Mink farm for many years in Canandaigua, New York to a Kindergarten Teacher. She paved the way to education for our children and community in her late 30’s and 40’s. Mary attended McGill University, where she received her Bachelor of Education. Her love for children and teaching permitted her a career of 30 + years to her community of Barriere Lake (Rapid Lake) and other places in the surrounding Anishnabe-Algonquin territory.

She had the uncanny ability to reach her community and people in a deep and positive way by using her traditional and cultural knowledge of Anishnabewin to relate to our changing ways in society. She was known by her Anishnabe name of Tcimena who truly lived life to the fullest through simple pleasures; enjoying the tranquil pleasures of the wilderness, chatting with friends and extended family, spending time with her siblings, children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins, nephews and nieces from near and far.

To all family, friends, and others whose lives were touched by Kokom Tcimena, the funeral service will be held at the KZ Funeral Home, 91 Kichi Mikan, Kitigan Zibi. She will be waked from Tuesday September 27th 1:30pm to Friday September 30th 1pm. She will then be buried at the KZ cemetery. A feast will be held at the Indian Hall after her burial.
